Trainings: Marissa completed her training as a Certified Lactation Counselor through the Healthy Children's Project and was certified by the Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice in August of 2024. Marissa also holds a Bachelor's degree in Theology from Roanoke College.
Marissa is new to the world of healthcare and lactation, but comes in with many years of leadership, teaching, and counseling experience. Having worked in professional ministry for 10+ years, Marissa is skilled in navigating complex situations, problem solving with specific goals in mind, and maintaining a calm and professional demeanor when faced with challenges. Marissa is passionate about meeting people where they are and helping them reach their personal goals while advocating for biological norms and evidence-based practices.
Marissa nursed her two children through some complexities that left her feeling very passionate about helping others navigate the amazing-yet sometimes challenging-breastfeeding relationship. After her son was born with IUGR and had a stay in the NICU, she was able to transition from formula feeding to exclusively pumping to exclusively breastfeeding-ONLY because she had the support of her sister (as she was training to become a CLC herself). Marissa went on to exclusively breastfeed her son, and is still nursing him 4 years later. After her daughter was born with a severe tongue tie, nursing became painful and almost unbearable. Because of the support and education of a local lactation consultant, Marissa was able to continue nursing both of her children. Those two experiences left Marissa feeling incredibly passionate and excited to step into this world as a professional lactation counselor.
